Dance Down Under overview
Known for its bold physicality, virtuosity of performance, distinct humour, raw edge, and playful fusion of narratives, technologies, performance languages and artforms, Australian dance stands out as a unique and refreshing voice in the international dance landscape.
As part of the Australia Council for the Arts' continued commitment to developing international markets for Australian performing arts, the community partnerships and market development section (CPMD) of the Australia Council initiated the Dance Down Under strategy in 2004, with the aims of profiling and promoting Australian contemporary dance to the US market.
From solo artists and flagship ensembles to the unique experience of Australian Indigenous dance, Australia has a rich diversity of critically acclaimed independent choreographers and dance companies who, with a reputation for excellence and innovation, regularly perform internationally.
Dance Down Under featured an annual Australian presence at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters’ (APAP) Conference incorporating a range of initiatives including seminars, showcases, receptions, information, resources and an exhibition booth.
Since 2004, the Australia Council has profiled a select number of contemporary dance artists and companies with export-ready work and a demonstrated commitment to developing the US as a key target market. In profiling dance in this way the Council aims to extend and enhance existing North American networks and to build long-term relationships which support a greater understanding of Australian dance and encourage its export to, and exchange with, the US.
To support these objectives, the Australia Council initiated the Dance Down Under US Ambassadors Program in 2004.
Dance Down Under Ambassadors are US-based dance and performing arts presenters who act as personal advocates for Australian dance companies and artists within the US. They actively participate in APAP events on behalf of Australian dance and act as 'mentors' for nominated Australian artists or companies.
