From strength to strength for Back to Back

Back to Back Theatre, an Australia Council multi-year theatre board funded company, has been going from strength to strength with their work receiving critical and audience acclaim both here and overseas. The company’s latest production, Food Court is no exception.

‘Every now and then a show comes along and reminds you that theatre is a burning glass, that it can be an art that focuses experience into an emotional thermic lance which sears through the intellect into the tissue of deep feeling, right where it hurts.’ Alison Croggon, Theatre Notes

Part concert, part theatre show, Food Court features improvised music by The Necks, one of the great cult bands of Australia.  Food Court is one woman’s story of humiliation and survival in a suburban wonderland somewhere between The Asian Hut and The Juice Bar

Food Court is a Melbourne Festival co-commission which premiered last year at The CUB Malthouse for the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Since then it has been presented in the company’s home town of Geelong, travelled to Belgium for the  Kunstenfestivaldesarts and most recently been presented in the Opera Theatre at the Sydney Opera House as part of as part of Luminous, a festival curated by Brian Eno. The production continues to receive outstanding critical acclaim including no less than three nominations for Helpmann Awards: Best New Australian Work, Best Original Score and Best Scenic Design.
