Australia at La Biennale di Venezia
Australia has been represented at La Biennale di Venezia since 1954 by 41 distinguished contemporary visual artists. This unique opportunity provides Australian artists and curators with high profile international exposure to new audiences, markets and contexts. Australia holds a special position as one of only 29 countries to have a national pavilion within the Giardini della Biennale, and the first 21st Century building. The award winning Australian Pavilion designed by Denton Corker Marshall opened in 2015 and was made possible through a highly successful public-private partnership.
Australia’s representation at La Biennale di Venezia is managed by the Australia Council for the Arts.
Our supporters and partners make Australia's representation possible
The generosity of individuals and organisations committed to showcasing contemporary Australian visual arts globally ensures the continued success of Australia at La Biennale di Venezia. Donations and corporate sponsorships provide three quarters of the funding for this project. There are many ways individuals, families and companies can be part of Australia’s representation at La Biennale di Venezia through giving and attending the exhibition.
More than 200 like-minded individuals give to Australia at Biennale Arte 2021 and champion this project. Champions not only support Australia’s exhibition at Biennale Arte 2021 through their donations, they also travel to Europe to celebrate their collective achievement together. While in Venice, Champions enjoy a specially curated program of activities, experiences and events led by the Chair of the Venice Council.
May Program 2021: a five day program during the exclusive vernissage period held before the Biennale is open to the public, which includes the official opening of the exhibition in the Australian Pavilion.
September Program 2021: a five day program that sidesteps the crowds, and opens the way to see the exhibitions that have won the coveted Golden Lions.
For the 2021 project we ask each Champion to donate to the exhibition (deductible tax recept) and pay a registration fee to cover the hospitality and experiences they’ll enjoy in Venice and at the Biennale Arte 2021.
The Australia Council will refund the registration fee for the ‘Aus at Venice’ Champions’ program up to sixty days prior to each program. All donations are gifts freely given, and as such are not subject to refund.
