9.30am – 9.40am   Welcome and Introduction

9.45am – 10.35am  Industry Forum Session 1 – Children’s books and the world we live in: all voices, all stories

If books for younger readers are to reflect the world/s we live in, we need to do more to include voices and stories that are underrepresented. In what ways are publishers in different regions working to broaden the kinds of stories we publish for young people? How are publishers working to make the industry more inclusive, to support all new voices? Is this particularly important for children’s publishers? How can we partner across borders to do this on a global scale?

Panel: Ia Atterholm (Sweden), Joanna Cárdenas (US), Julia Reuter (Germany), Susan Van Metre (US).

Facilitator: Annabel Barker (VIPs Committee)

10.40am – 11.30am  Industry Forum Session 2 – Deal or no deal? Pitches, auctions and creating buzz

Books that land huge advances are often bought at auction. But how do auctions actually work and what's it like to be involved in a bidding war? Do sought-after titles always become the subject of heated auctions? What are the other ways to generate excitement for a title you believe has huge potential? How do you know when you have a big book on your hands? How much do these sales come down to the instincts and leg work of literary agents and scouts? Does a big advance actually translate to a bestseller? How important is the timing of the pitch and submission in terms of the book fair calendar? What makes a good pitch? What are the dos and don’ts of submitting to different imprints within the same house? What about those surprise successes?

Panel: Faye Bender (US), Simon Boughton (US), Rebecca Servadio (UK).

Facilitator: Gaby Naher (VIPs Committee)

11.30am – 11.45am  Morning tea

11.45am – 12.30pm  Industry Forum Session 3 – American Hustle: Breaking into the US market

American publishers seem to be paying much more attention to the international market over the last few years with a growing number of Australian books breaking through. How do US editors find our books? Do these sales happen only through close relationships with co-agents? How far in advance do you need to submit, are lead times actually 18 months? Do US editors really want editorial input? Are author tours a make-or-break factor in acquisitions? Are US readers more open to literature in translation? And of course, with all of the numerous publishers and imprints in the US, how on earth do you navigate who does what?

Panel: Peter Blackstock (US), Pamela Malpas (US), Stephen Morrow (US).

Facilitator: Wenona Byrne (Australia Council)
