AUSTRALIA COUNCIL MOURNS ALAN BECHER

The Australia Council for the Arts today expressed its sadness at the death of Alan Becher, artistic director of Perth Theatre Company.

Alan was among the most significant theatre artists to work in Western Australia over the past 25 years. He was the co-founder of Perth Theatre Company in 1994, and directed many of its greatest works.

He was particularly known for his support of local writers, and for his own talent in adapting the work of WA novelists for the stage. These included Tom Hungerford’s Stories From Suburban Road, Mudrooroo’s Wildcat Falling and Elizabeth Jolley’s The Newspaper of Claremont Street.

‘Australian theatre has lost one of its passionate voices with Alan’s passing,’ said the Australia Council’s theatre board chair Rosalba Clemente.

‘His legacy however will live on through the work of the countless artists he has supported over his career. We extend our sympathy to his family and many friends.’
