Vale Martin Wesley-Smith

The Australia Council acknowledges the passing of Australian composer Martin Wesley-Smith, and recognises his celebrated career in Australia music, as well as his contribution to the Australia Council over many years.

Martin was a member of the Australia Council’s Music Board from 1974 – 1978. He held numerous roles from the late 80s to early 90s including as an advisor and member of the Performing Arts Board.

His music career spanned a diverse range of musical genres, from choral and chamber music, to pioneering electronic and art music. Australia Council grants supported the commissioning of 32 of his works.

Martin received two Fellowships including, in 1987, the Australia Council’s Don Banks Composer Fellowship.

He was awarded an AM (Order of Australia) in 1998 for services to music as a composer, scriptwriter, children’s songwriter, lecturer, presenter of multi-media concerts and a member of various Australia Council boards and committees.

The Australia Council sends its heartfelt condolences and deepest respect to Martin’s friends, family and colleagues.
