Arts/Screen Hackathon
Held in November 2017, the Arts/Screen Hackathon was a two-day event that explored and generated ideas with the aim of increasing Australian screen content inspired by the arts.
Over 60 emerging artists and filmmakers, technologists, digital storytellers, entrepreneurs, gamers, and those curious to create new ideas joined the event. Supported by expert mentors and established artists, the participants developed ideas to increase Australian screen content that bridged the arts, screen and tech industries.
The event was delivered in partnership with a range of industry partners including the Australia Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Screen Australia, Screen Producers Australia and Hackathons Australia. Tata Consultancy Services supported the event and funded the First prize (valued at $5,000) that was awarded to Metamorf.
Metamorf is a prototype for a machine-learning enabled smart bridge to help producers find original Australian content to adapt for screen and stage. Producers will be able to freely enter search terms (such as 'noir', 'stranger things') and get suggestions for related Australian books, plays, pictures, et cetera, along with the ability to option them. The members of Metamorf were Melissa Lee Speyer (artist), Imogen Hopper (filmmaker), Will Tan (developer) and Sreeja Gupta (technologist/coder).
The event was facilitated by Michelle Manner ‘hackathon Queen, founder at variant X from Melbourne. The Judges included Michael Carrington (Head of Children's and Education, ABC TV), Kirstin Sillitoe (Google Creative Lab), George Sotiropoulos (Assistant Secretary, Classification Branch, Content Division, Department of Communications and the Arts) and Nikhil Bhardwaj (Regional HC-LS Sales, TCS A/NZ).
